Institutional Research

This article shows channel 4's viewer ratings have dropped, according to a recent survey. BBC1 came out on top, as it got the highest viewer rating out of the five terrestrial channels. This is because the BBC are more diverse. Whereas the main focus for channel 4 viewers is big brother, it seems that channel 4 are relying on their audeinces because of big brother. They need more divers programmes that will attract new audiences. My documentary will provide channel 4 with the diverse programe that they need, which will attract a new audience. As it is informative, interesting and humerous.

BBC1 traditionally gains the most viewers, along with ITV1, as they are the most established channel and aim to appeal to the widest possible audience. Many would say that this model, of appealing to a wide audience, is now outdated given the choice of digital channels. ITV1 is the channel that has suffered most because of the proliferation of channels. Channel 4's audience's have also dropped but they do have an advantage in that they already target a narrower range of viewers, which means they can target them more effectively. They have also tried to shore up their audience by launching digital channels (E4 and More 4) in order to create a stronger '4' brand. ITV and BBC have also done this but in ITV's case it doesn't seem to have worked as well.
Channel 4 have suffered from the criticism that they are too reliant on Big Brother, which before this year, actually helped to preserve their audience share. So you are right that there is a need for a documentary like yours to show that Channel 4 is offering a more diverse range of programming than wall to wall Big Brother.
Check out Channel 4's programme policy for 2008 at http://www.channel4.com/about4/programmepolicy.html. This emphasises the need for more contemporary factual programming, like Cutting Edge.
In addition, take a look at their overall outlook following a major review of the channel's purpose at http://www.channel4.com/about4/next_on4.html. This document discusses their emphasis on "young and diverse audiences". They are crucially attempting to receive additional public funding, via the TV licence fee, which will probably mean that they have to show that they are about more than just Big Brother.
